Interpreting the Natural: Contemporary Visions of Scholars’ Rocks

During the height of Triennial 2025’s summer events and creative chaos, I received a call from Donna Dodson to participate in a group show. It was a well-timed invitation to return to my studio. I’m honored to be included alongside artists Paul Harris, Danielle Krcmar, Lisa Tang Liu, Cathy Della Lucia, Andy Moerlein, Wen-hao Tien, Alice Wu, Yu-Wen Wu, and Quanzhou Zhao.
The body of work included, Found:Made, brings together found asphalt and cement, single-use plastics cast in concrete, and video gathered over nine years of commuting and travel. The sculptures include cast water bottles from trips to places like Miami, Mexico, and Morocco, alongside bottles I’ve been given in more ordinary circumstances—for example, one I received when I started to faint at my doctor’s office. In a formal exercise, these bottles are paired with pieces of found asphalt and concrete—ubiquitous materials that smother the earth while also connecting and dividing us. These fragments were found in similar places, near and far.

The videos follow a horizon line across airplane windows, beaches, mountains, and water, and eventually back to the sculptures, blurring boundaries between continents and commodities.
Some of the sculptures ask you to bend down to see them. The small LCD screens ask you to slow down and decipher the moving images. I hope you’ll walk away considering the systems and habits in which we participate, and our interdependence within them. May this act of observation make room for curiosity, humor, and the possibility of choosing differently.
